What Is Ayurveda and Why Is It Still Relevant Today?
According to ancient Indian Literature, the Charaka Samhita, the oldest and most authentic treatise, the word Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words: Ayur (life) and Veda (knowledge), which together translate to “the knowledge of life.” Where modern medicine often focuses on treating symptoms (well, it really just manages it), Ayurveda focuses on:
- Preventing a disease
- Maintaining balance
- Understanding the root cause of health issues
In the realm of Ayurveda, proper health exists when your body, mind, and emotions are in harmony and your dosha balance guides this harmony.
What is Dosha in Ayurveda?
In Ayurveda, all things in the universe are formed from five fundamental elements. Namely: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The five elements combine to form three primary life forces, called Dosha:
- Vata Dosha (Air + Space)
- Pitta Dosha (Fire + Water)
- Kapha Dosha (Water + Earth)
In further light. Every person has all three doshas, but typically one or two are more prominent. This individual makeup, called Prakriti, is your natural constitution.

Now, let’s look into each of these Dosha:
-
Vata Dosha Body Type: The Creative Thinker
A Vata is the energy of movement that controls breathing, circulation, nerve impulses, and creativity. People with a dominant Vata constitution often have a slim or lean body type and may find it difficult to gain weight. They commonly experience dry skin and hair, cold hands and feet, and visible veins. In terms of personality, Vata types are usually creative and imaginative, quick thinkers, and enthusiastic. They tend to be energetic and talkative, though they may tire easily due to their sensitive, active nature. Vata people often excel in creative fields such as art, writing, dance, and design.
When Vata goes out of balance, you may experience:
- Anxiety or overthinking
- Insomnia
- Constipation
- Bloating
- Joint pain
To support and balance Vata, it’s best to favour warm, nourishing, and grounding foods such as cooked meals, soups, stews, and healthy fats like ghee. Cold foods, raw salads, and excess caffeine should be limited, as they can aggravate Vata’s light and dry qualities. Following a consistent daily routine is especially important, as Vata thrives on stability, regularity, and calm.
-
Pitta Dosha Body Type: The Natural Leader
Pitta is the energy of transformation and digestion, governing metabolism, intelligence, and ambition. People with a dominant Pitta constitution often have a medium, athletic build and naturally warm body temperature. Their skin tends to be oily or sensitive, with a tendency toward acne or rashes. In terms of personality, Pitta types are usually highly focused, confident, and driven. They are natural leaders with a competitive spirit and strong determination. Pitta people love challenges and often excel in business, management, or leadership roles.
When Pitta goes out of balance, you may experience:
- Anger or irritability
- Acid reflux or indigestion
- Skin inflammation
- Excess sweating
To balance Pitta, include cooling, calming foods in your diet, such as sweet fruits and refreshing drinks like coconut water. Reducing spicy, fried foods and limiting alcohol can help prevent excess heat and irritation in the body and mind. A balanced routine with adequate rest and cooling practices supports Pitta’s natural harmony.
Lifestyle tip: Slow down and make time for relaxation.
-
Kapha Dosha Body Type: The Calm Supporter
Kapha is the energy of structure and stability. It governs immunity, strength, and emotional calmness. People with a dominant Kapha constitution often have a strong, broad body frame and tend to gain weight easily. They usually have thick hair, glowing skin, and naturally good stamina. In terms of personality, Kapha types are calm, patient, and emotionally grounded. They are known for their loyalty, compassion, and ability to listen deeply and support others. Kapha people often do well in caregiving, teaching, or healing professions.
When Kapha goes out of balance, you may experience:
- Weight gain
- Sluggishness
- Low motivation
- Depression
- Excess mucus
To balance Kapha, favour light, warm, and energising foods, along with vegetables and warming spices like ginger and pepper. Heavy or oily meals, excessive dairy intake, and sugary snacks should be reduced, as they can contribute to sluggishness. Staying active and maintaining variety in daily habits helps keep Kapha feeling light, motivated, and balanced.
Lifestyle tip: Stay active and avoid long naps.
Can You Have More Than One Dosha?
W Many people are dual-doshic, such as:
- Vata–Pitta
- Pitta–Kapha
- Vata–Kapha
While some rare individuals are Tridoshic, meaning all three of the doshas are balanced. Your dosha balance may also change due to age, season, stress, diet, and lifestyle. Thus, Ayurveda encourages regular self-awareness.
