The word 'Swedana' is inferred from the Sanskrit word 'swid', which stands for 'to sweat or to perspire'.
When abhyangam: a full body oil massage is carried out by an ayurveda teacher at the centre, an ayurvedic steam bath called Swedana is continued after that. Steaming the body post abhyangam is very necessary. It increases the effectiveness of the oil massage. The steam treatment is practiced at an ayurvedic center or clinic by Ayurvedic doctors or professionals who have a very good knowledge of ayurvedic steaming. The treatment is applied in a closed chamber, ensuring the patient's comfort. The patient has to sit or lie down in the chamber. The head remains out of the chamber.
While massaging the body with oil heals many health problems, steaming opens your skin pores. It helps the oil applied during a massage penetrate the target organs. There is a lot of sweating and perspiration when steam is taken. Direct heat is not given to the body. Instead, indirect heat in the form of steam is given to a person. Steam is also given to a person before the ayurvedic procedures required for detoxifying the body. The process of steaming helps in detoxification by opening the pores and promoting sweating, which aids in the elimination of toxins that can cause diseases if not removed from the body. Applying steam helps dilate or expand various channels present in your body. Steaming is very necessary for separating harmful toxins from your body so that they can be eliminated.
The swedana procedure is a comforting and relaxing experience. It involves sitting in a wooden box or cabin designed for your comfort. Once you're in a comfortable position, healing herbal steam is released into the box, creating a soothing cloud that envelops you. This steam, infused with healing herbs, works to reduce pain and inflammation. The entire process lasts around ten to fifteen minutes, leaving you feeling comforted and at ease.
