The word 'Swedana' is inferred from Sanskrit word 'swid', stand for 'to sweat or to perspire'.
When abhyangam: a full body oil massage is carried out by an ayurveda teacher at center, an ayurvedic steam bath called Swedana is continued after that. Steaming the body post abhyangam is very necessary. It increases the effectiveness of the oil massage. The steam treatment is practiced at an ayurvedic center or clinic by Ayurvedic doctors or professionals who have a very good knowledge of ayurvedic steaming. The treatment is applied in a closed chamber. The patient has to sit or lie down in the chamber. The head remains out of the chamber.
While massaging the body with oil heals many health problems, steaming opens your skin pores. It helps the oil applied during a massage in penetrating the target organs. There is a lot of sweating and perspiration when steam is taken. Direct heat is not given to the body. Instead of that, indirect heat in the form of steam is given to a person. The procedure of swedana involves exposure to steam inside a box or cabin made of wood. You need to sit in the box in a comfortable position. After that, herbal steam is released in the box. The steam contains healing herbs that reduce pain and inflammation. This steam treatment is requires around ten to fifteen minutes. It helps in rejuvenating the body.
